Detoxing with Smoothies
Workshop offers recipes for cleansing your body naturally
By Mary Esparra
When she was 18, Beth Garrison said, she almost died from a kidney infection. After that, she suffered from irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome and kidney stones.
"Every five years I got sick," she said. "When the doctor wanted to give me diuretics and another pill,
I knew it didn't make sense to me. It was my last bout of fibromyalgia, where I was on disability, when I said 'I don't care what I have to do, but I have to get my power back.' It began my journey of focusing on the solution rather than the problem."
Today, Garrison — who has studied with well-known alternative medicine authoritities including Dr.Andrew Weil and Dr. Deepak Chopra — is a health and detoxification specialist, coach, lymphatic drainage specialist, hydro therapist and Reiki practitioner in New York City and out of Cornwall-on-Hudson.
She recently conducted a "Smoothies & Detoxification" class at the Newburgh Free Library.
Smoothies a staple of her diet
A wife and mother, Garrison said that she and her family hardly ever get sick. "Maybe three times in 15 years we've used Tylenol, and we don't use anything else," Garrison said. "Completely nothing. We go to CVS to develop pictures."
Garrison said she exercises and drinks healthy green smoothies, a staple in her diet.
"People who look good and feel good do so with that intention 90 percent of the time," she said. "The first ingredient is always a desire to feel great and know we are well.
"When we're not feeling well and not looking well, it helps when we shift our focus and attention to what we desire."
Working with her clients, Garrison addresses many topics including physical issues, diet, breathing, mental and emotional issues, and trust.
"If we're a person who doesn't trust or forgive others, how are we going to love ourselves and change?" she asks.
Says Garrison,"The benefits of detoxing and incorporating smoothies can be increasing energy, strengthening the immune system, balancing pH in the body, improving the function of the five organs of elimination, balancing or losing weight and improving absorbsion of vitamins and minerals.
"I want people to know that it's possible for them to get well, feel better," she added. "I went from almost dying, being on disability, to feeling like I'm 16 again."

Strawberries are low on the glycemic index. Collard greens are a natural blood thinner and energize and prevent cancer. Coconut oil destroys viruses, is an antibiotic and is known to support metabolic and heart health, improve energy and create beautiful skin. Lemon is alkalizing.
