Fasting vs. Cleansing

There are many wonderful attributes to fasting and cleansing and they are slightly different from one another… I'd love to share some of my own personal experiences with both!

I did my first juice cleanse at 22 years old. It was 2 weeks of just juice and Epsom salts. It was also during a time in my life where I had nothing to do but make it to my waitressing job on time and be completely self absorbed! Yoga, steaming, meditating... now these are totally awesome things to do and i recommend to anyone who has the opportunity to take care of themselves in this manner to GO FOR IT!! However, for me, nowadays life is much more demanding being a single working mother of two I, unfortunately, do not have the availability to always support myself in these ways, they are more of a luxury for me now. In the “olden days” as my children love to call it, juice fasting came easier to me because I had the space and time to really do it right. One of the hardest lessons for me to learn as I grow older has been to accept that things change and that I am constantly changing. Although I am graciously aware of how much I have grown and evolved as a person in this last decade of being a mother I still struggle to find the grace in letting go of certain ego filled prides like being able to do a 10 day master cleanse with my eyes closed! Because of this mentality it took me a long time to realize that cleansing can be just as efficient and in certain ways a healthier option than fasting. Now allow me to get into some of the differences.

What is fasting exactly? According to Wikipedia, “Fasting is a willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink or both, for a period of time.” When we stop eating solid foods we give our digestive system a, typically, well needed break. It takes between 2-4 hours to digest most meals. The sloppier the combination of foods the harder it is to process and longer it takes to break down. The simple truth is that by the time we are finally finished digesting the last thing we put in our mouths most of us are eating again! Truth be told most of us are at it again well BEFORE we have finished digesting allowing a breeding field for purification, fermentation, gas, bloating and toxic poison to circulate through our systems. When we give our digestive systems a break from spending all this energy all day long just on trying to keep up with what we are feeding ourselves we end up with a surplus of energy! Its like a savings account of energy that can then be spent elsewhere like healing our systems, enzymes can break down the calcification deposits in the joints that cause arthritis instead of breaking down food. We can sleep better and repair ourselves quite efficiently. However most of us hold about 2-3 days worth of reserves so that we don’t go into starvation mode the second we stop eating so if you are only fasting for 2 to 3 days you may be eating again before really reaping the benefits of a true fast.

While fasting has many wonderful benefits there are downsides as well. Many of the juice cleanses today have a LOT of sugar which can trigger hypo-glycemic attacks and are not a friend to a gut dealing with Candida over growth. They can feel depriving and isolating as it can be quite challenging to continue socializing in a regular way with others when you can’t partake in meals as so much of our interaction centers around food. I’m not suggesting this is a reason not to challenge yourself but I’ve seen so many people, myself included, set themselves up for failure only to deal with feelings of self hatred and a general beat down after… and none of us deserve that. Finally fasting can slow the metabolism obviously and since there’s little substance most people don’t have energy to work out which also slows the metabolism making breaking the fast that much more imperative to do correctly. Some people may gain weight back quickly and can end up feeling bloated and gassy again not to mention discouraged that after working so hard they don’t feel great again. These are some reasons why a general cleanse instead of a fast could be a better option… I’ll talk more about this tomorrow!

Setting the Stage

June… a perfect time to cleanse! The need to hibernate and stay warm under oodles of blankets is over. We are opening windows, taking off sweaters and needing less to keep us going as we naturally begin to feed off the energy of the sun. So it’s the perfect time to cleanse and we may even feel inspired to do so…. But how do we get started? Well in my experience the best way to start any new project is to set the stage… you want to buy a new dress you start saving up money, you’re going on a holiday vacation you dig out your suitcase, sunscreen and travel guide book. Same concept here… you want to cleanse your body, mind and spirit… you need to start with your immediate environment. Here are some things I ALWAYS like to do when starting any kind of cleansing ritual

1. SET YOUR INTENTION

Committing to a cleanse is challenging enough as it tends to bring up a lot of fears for us… letting go of our comforting habitual ways, starting something new, CHANGE. It’s incredibly helpful to be clear on WHY we have chosen to cleanse. Do we want to drop a few pounds, clear up a skin irritation, heal our gut or just clear our minds from a chronic brain fog that seems to always be following us around? Get specific! The first step to manifesting what we want in our lives is to think about it. I recommend writing down what you want to achieve by clearing out the garbage and making space for something new and beautiful… what do you want to fill your space with?

2. CLEAN YOUR PHYSICAL SPACE

How can we except to clean up our insides if the space surrounding us is a cluttered mess? Our external environment is often a direct reflection of what’s happening inside of us… and vice versa! I know for me, ever since being a young girl, if my room was a mess my grades were poor, my mood was down and my outlook was hopeless. As soon as I cleaned up my room I was happier, studying came easier and my life was manageable again. Take a few days to clean up and clear out the space around you. Throw out the things that no longer serve you or bring you joy. LET GO of the garbage that weighs you down! It’s liberating… I just did this a few days ago. I threw out a box of stockings that I’ve been carrying around with me since HIGHSCHOOL!!! I’m 46 now… that box has been in every apartment, cross country 4 x’s… I honestly don’t know what magic I thought was hidden in that plastic box of stockings… but I DO know that I found a profound magic in finally letting it go.

3. SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS

Listen, we all have triggers. Why keep loaded weapons around your home? Get rid of the triggers. If you have a ½ full bottle of booze lying around in plain site give it away or put it out of eyesight. Clear your cupboards of packaged foods that tempt you. Clear your fridge of things that you won’t be eating while on The Cleanse. If you live with others, like i live with 2 kids, and you can’t get rid of everything then do your best to eliminate from eyesight the things that you won’t be having but your really attached to. It’s a great time to encourage your loved ones to reach for healthier options as well. I know for us, my kids love feeling empowered to support me while I’m trying to make changes that will bring us as a family more joy and well being.

4. GRATITUDE

Start getting in touch with your gratitude even before you start The Cleanse. The more we are in our gratitude the less deprived we feel. The more we remember all the things to be grateful for the less pissed off we get at the little inconveniences in life, and the less we get triggered back into old patterns and habits. Stay in the gratitude. Remember to be thankful for every once of help, kindness, words of encouragement, doors being held open, customer service that comes your way. This is your natural birth right, to be helped, honored and respected, but remember… it doesn’t have to be this way. The more you acknowledge these beautiful gems of love in your life the more they will occur. Start making a gratitude list every day. Write them down in the beginning so you can go back and see how you’ve grown! Try coming up with 5 things a day you are grateful for. In the beginning believe it or not it may feel like a struggle to come up with 5 things, depending on the day of course. Even if its being grateful for clean sheets and your favorite TV show, write it down. As you become more comfortable living in your gratitude finding things to be grateful for will come easily to you. My kids and I speak our gratitude lists out loud to each other every night before bed. It’s the last thing we do before we drift off into lala land. Grounding ourselves into our gratitude before saying good night has become a beautiful ritual in our lives.

5. SLEEP

Enlist yourself in the sleeping army. Think of it as boot camp for healthy sleep patterns. Obviously, the more we are able to really rest peacefully, the more we can heal, recover and rejuvenate. We need REAL rest to feel good. We need to feel good to make good choices on a continuous basis. Try, as much as possible, waking with the sun and sleeping with the sun. Let yourself wind down and settle down when the sun goes down. The more you do that the more easily you will be able to wake up with the sunrise! It’s an AMAZING feeling to greet the new day… wake to the natural light of day slowly creeping up on you. Try sleeping with the shades open, and the windows too if it’s not too noisy. Hear the birds singing their good morning cheer song JUST for you each day. To help you get to sleep try some melatonin instead of those heavy pharmaceuticals, trust me, eventually your body will adjust. Listen to some meditations after doing your gratitude list. There’s an app called “Calm” that has some wonderful sleeping meditations and the phone will shut off automatically when their finished so you can just drift off. I’ve never heard the end of any of them… so that should tell you something!

Cleansing is a gift! It is a wonderful opportunity for change and growth. Once you clear your external and internal space you will have an open playing playing field… fill it with everything your true self desires.

It’s suddenly June!

It’s suddenly June! It feels like just a few weeks ago it was 20 degrees out and New Yorkers were trudging along in the cold… wind to our backs AND to our faces! No sun to be had, no relief in sight. But that’s the beautiful thing about living in a city like New York… we have the amazing gift of the seasons and we get to experience them all FULLY.

So get ready to live THIS summer as fully as you lived the winter. For every article of extra clothing or extra pounds you may have put on… take them ALL OFF AND MORE! THIS very summer has the potential to be one of the best summer’s ever! The first step is to feel GOOD. And the best way to make that happen is to start taking really, really good care of ourselves.

Its a great time to cleanse. Clear out all the extra baggage and heaviness thats been accumulating. Get re-centered and refocused. Throw-Back-Thursday: Josh’s Journey

Today is ‪#‎ThrowBack‬ ‪#‎Thursday‬, and I thought it would be appropriate to share my story about the personal transformations I’ve gone through since joining SanaVita, Center for Holistic Cleansing.

For those of who you haven’t met me yet, my name is Joshua Board, and I am the Operations Manager here at SanaVita. I also happen to be a grown version of the boy you see in that picture above! I grew up in Huntington Long Island, where I was raised by my two lovely parents; who like most parents in the late 80’s and early 90’s were unaware of how to truly eat well and treat/heal the body naturally.

Every since I was a little kid I would get sick with a sinus infection, or from asthma attacks as many as five times a year. When I would become sick I was generally out for the count one or two weeks at a time and taking antibiotics 4-5 times a year. Additionally, I began to develop heart burn and IBS issues around the age of 12, which persisted for over a decade. My family was unaware of Holistic Health, and we made no connection between my weak immune system, my gut issues, my diet and lifestyle, or how I treated my body with Antibiotics when it was weakened.

Fast forward to 2010; I reached out to an old family friend Gabriel Hoffman, who I knew worked in the field of holistic health. I approached Gabe in the hopes of addressing my diet and lifestyle choices…little did I know I would receive life changing guidance. Through BioFeedback, Gabe was able to evaluate where there was inflammation and stress in my body. He spoke with me about the damaging effects of Antibiotics, stress, land a lack of crucial vitamins and minerals. I started to make some of the changes I needed to improve the quality of my life.

After a few years of grinding away at a job that took its toll on me physically and emotionally, I saw Gabe again, hoping to not only address my diet, but my overall health and mental outlook. I had reached my tipping point as my health was at its lowest point. It was then, in 2014, that Gabe introduced me to SanaVita and it’s wonderful founder and owner, Arul Goldman. I began receiving Biofeedback treatments, Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, and Ionic Footbaths. I also began to take a regiment of Homeopathic remedies, probiotics, and natural detox protein powder. I began to feel the positive effects immediately!

I am happy to say that I no longer face any IBS gut issues, my energy is up, and my heart burn is all but gone! Additionally, I have only gotten sick once between my introduction to SanaVita in early 2014, and now. (and even then, my only cold lasted for 2 days!!) The level of warmth and appreciation I feel for Gabe Hoffman, Arul Goldman, and everyone at SanaVita is beyond measure. Words cannot explain how grateful I am, for the Holistic approach they have provided me has forever changed my life for the better.

We’ve all done it. Mindlessly opened the refrigerator door, a vacant gaze scanning the contents … quietly searching for that perfect something. But what IS that perfect something? Is it last night’s leftover casserole? Or the chia seed pudding you proudly made all by yourself? Or that crumbs cupcake you bought earlier for the kids as a surprise that’s taunting you now? Chances are it’s none of those! Most likely its comfort we are looking for in that moment.

When we are stressed, sad, bored, lonely or scared we look for comfort. Comfort can come in many forms. The healthiest form is in resolve of the conflict… if we are stressed over our big proposal at work, then if we finish the project we take away the stress! If we are sad about a fight we had with our significant other, we can call and apologize for the part WE played, listen to their side of the issue and eventually have resolve and make up! PRESTO!! Now we are happy again. But often times resolve is not as easy as one, two, three… perhaps we are stressed over money and we can’t just magically find the answer to getting more money as quickly as we would like… the stress remains and we look for a way to soothe our discomfort. We may talk about it with a friend or loved one and get some advice, or a reassuring hug. But many of us will internalize the stress. Obsessing over it in our minds, and look for an external factor to distract us. We may surf the web, go out dancing… some of us may turn to drugs and alcohol… and others may eat.

Although eating in a time of stress can feel very comforting in the moment, it can most likely exacerbate the original problem. I know for me personally at times when I turned to food for comfort I got an immediate sense of euphoria and excitement. For a moment I was taken away from the unpleasant thoughts and feelings I was experiencing and actually felt a certain FREEDOM in letting go of my usual restrictive patterns. That type of freedom can be incredibly healthy AND liberating if done for the right reasons. However losing control and diving into a 7 layer cake face down in an attempt to escape is not the way my friends. And every time after, it left me in a pit of self-loathing. So now not only did I have the original trigger to still deal with, I had the self-loathing on top of it AND the extra lbs I may have put on! THIS IS NOT THE LAYER CAKE I HAD INTENDED!!!!

If you are however going to emotionally eat… try eating fruits and veggies! I know it may not sound quite as glamorous but they can help get you through the moment without the consequences waiting on the other side. Fruit will still give you that sugar high you may be craving but at least it’s water dense and full of live nutrients. I love to spice up my fruit, specifically papaya that is FULL of natural enzymes, by sprinkling fresh limejuice over it and adding a little pink Himalayan sea salt. And veggies are crunchy, time consuming to eat and have very little calories. And don’t forget… BOTH are great for pooping! Gotta LOVE that!

After the trigger moment has past and you back in the present moment get back to the basics! Here are 7 basic rituals to work into your daily routine.

1. Start your day off right. First thing I do every morning before I brush my teeth is drink a tall glass of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the blood of plants. It is anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti Candidal, full of live fresh nutrients and works as a great mouth wash but for your entire intestinal tract… from mouth all the way through to the descending colon.It freshesn things up and is very stimulating for your first morning bowel movement. It’s the first thing I consume every morning. I take a few tablespoons in a tall glass of filtered water and drink it with my probiotics (which everyone should also be taking! SanaVita has an excellent daily and super strength here) I’ve been drinking chlorophyll in this ritualistic manner for the last 20 years! It’s replaced my morning cup of Joe as for me it has the same stimulating effect as coffee does both in my colon and in the pep in my step! If this is too intense for you at this point I recommend starting the day with a warm glass of lemon water. Feel free to sprinkle a bit of cayenne pepper into it, which is also stimulating and helps to increase metabolism.

2. Eat a well balanced diet. There are lots of fads out there: Atkins, Paleo, low fat, high fat… for starters try a diet that includes fresh fruit, vegetables and healthy fats. This will provide a lot of cellulose fiber that we need for healthy digestive system and the healthy fats not only help to lubricate the intestinal tract but also are incredibly satiating curbing unhealthy cravings. Not to mention great for the skin and hair as well!

3. Don’t skip meals so that you don’t over eat and find yourself pounding pound cake at 3pm in the office kitchen! Eat on as regular of a schedule as possible. I find 5 to 6 small meals a day are perfect for me. Keeps my blood sugar level through out the day and allows me to always have that next bit of delicious goodness right around the corner. If that doesn’t work for you try 3 solid meals with 2 snacks in between a day. Play around with it and consult with a holistic health counselor for extra support!

4. BE PREPARED! As a mother I have learned the invaluable meaning of these 2 words! Know who you are and where you are going and think ahead. If you know you are going to be in the car for a long period of time… bring a protein bar with you! I love quest protein bars as they have over 20 grams of protein and are still moderately low in Carbs and high in fiber. We also have amazing Paleo friendly bars at SV that I will often indulge in that I LOVE! High protein bars are the perfect snack as they are easy to carry, whip out and eat on the go without causing the extra need to pee like if you are travelling or in an all day seminar. If you do have access to a bathroom however, fresh juices and smoothies are another fabulous snack or small meal to have. Cut up veggie sticks, a smashed avocado in a Tupperware or an apple or orange are other favorite choices of mine… spruce it up with some almond butter slathered on that apple! Oh… and NUTS! Just keep them raw (& preferably sproated) and always best to put the allotted portion into a zip lock to ward off over eating of nuts.

5. Drink plenty of water!!! Clear enough?

6. Have a strong support system! We all need them! Nobody gets through this thing called life all on his or her own. Psychologist are patients themselves, sponsors have their own sponsors parents are children to their parents. It’s easy to suffer alone. What takes courage and strength is to realize when you need help and to have the balls to ask for it! Set up a strong support system around you. Tell someone what you are going through. We don’t need a TON of friends in our lives but the ones we do have should be of high quality. Surround yourself with people who care about you and your happiness and be honest with them. Really let them in and let them help support you when you are feeling weak. The ones that count will be there for you. Every time.

7. Meditation. It’s imperative to get some sleep! In order to do this we need to quiet the mind. Clearing the mind and stopping the continuous steams of thoughts worries and concerns is not easy. It takes diligent practice. Everyone can benefit from a little quiet mediation every day. Even my kids will mediate for just 1 minute when they get upset to try to calm themselves down. They find it empowering to have a tool in their tool belt to grasp onto in a time of need. I recommend starting slow. Set your timer for 7 minutes and sit quietly with your eyes closed till you here the timer ring indicating its time to open your eyes and come back. Most likely your mind will still race like wild fire in the beginning. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Just keep at it and when you realize your mind is racing, try and quiet it down again. This may happen over and over again at first but as the days, weeks or months go by you will notice that you are sitting quietly with greater ease and comfort. SUPER SIZE IT!!! —EXERCISE. Personally I LOVE to exercise. The endorphins released give me the energy to face my high-powered life! Raising 2 young kids in NYC as a single mama, running a business, working with my clients and being fully present for them, being a daughter, a sister, a friend… and finding time to take care of myself. It’s a LOT!!! But exercise helps give me the GO to go out there and SHOW UP!!! Personally my favorites are spin (soul cycle in the house!) yoga and dance. Find what you love and learn to love giving it to yourself! It’s hard enough to motivate to get out there and exercise so choose what works for you rand your life style.

Learning to live life on life’s terms is a life long practice. We cannot control what happens or what people do… all we CAN control is how we react to those triggers. Managing stress during tough times and making healthier choices today will give us the tools we need help stay focused and on track during times of distress!

It’s totally hard to believe but it is already June! Schools are wrapping up with their end of the year parties, field trips, picnics etc…. people are getting ready to let go and let LOOSE!!! But before we get too ahead of ourselves I think it is the PERFECT time to pause, take a breath and look inside. What do you envision for yourself this summer? Will you have time off? Hit the beach, vacation in the hamptoms or possibly even Greece? For many of us we just stay local enjoying the quiet of the city for once. But we can’t ignore the basic truths of the summer… it’s hot. Here in NYC it’s HUMID!! And we all know what it’s like to walk past a fermenting bag of trash basking in 90 degree weather omitting the most foul of smells. Personally I like to travel by means of my bicycle in the summer…. Meet Erica

As a busy professional, achieving balance when it comes to health and wellness has become a primary focus in my life. I don’t always get the balance right, but it is something I strive for every day. I always feel so much happier and able to handle challenges when I’m in optimal health. On the other hand, when I’m not healthy, I feel sluggish and foggy. The sad thing is that many of us are used to functioning in this state. We are expected to perform at our utmost best, yet the engine that is our body is bogged down by unhealthy foods, environmental pollution and overwhelming stress.

Perhaps this is the reason I was able to breathe a huge, relaxing sigh the minute I walked into SanaVita just over 3 years ago. Everything about SanaVita spoke to healing and relaxation which is exactly what I needed. At the time I was a mid-level tax attorney with an enjoyable, challenging job, yet I was unsure about my career and how long I wanted to live in the “grind”. Within SanaVita’s walls, I was able to leave the stress of my day job at the door and create a space where I could heal things within myself. A lot happened during the year I visited SanaVita. Most notably, I received an offer of a tax position in London, which I immediately jumped on.

London has certainly been a time of growth for me. I think I needed to try practicing my profession in a different environment before deciding that my passion is not in my career. But more importantly, London is where I’ve decided to create a career out of my passion. I’ve always loved traveling, and being in London has opened the world to me. I have been able to transport myself to different cultures within a matter of hours. It occurred to me that my life has been so positively impacted by my travel experiences that I want to help others do the same. Just over a year ago, I launched my travel consulting company, The Travel Analyst LLC. I’m not a traditional travel agency. Instead, I spend time getting to fully know my clients and what they are looking for in a trip. Then, I carefully curate trips to meet my clients’ needs. My company focuses on every aspect; from choosing the ideal location to minimizing the out of pocket cost. As I develop partnerships and relationships with local tour operators, I am able to bring value that can’t be found by searching Expedia or even Trip Advisor.

Not surprisingly, most of my clients are busy professionals like me. I relate to them because I know what it’s like to be stressed at work and looking forward to the vacation. Inevitably, our discussions wander away from the trip itself towards other areas of their lives; from the unreasonable boss to the challenges at home. Because I see a piece of myself in my clients, it’s my desire to support them as much as I can. As a result, I’m launching an online magazine entitled Out of Office, which features articles and tips to help my clients achieve balance in their lives. I think achieving balance comes in 3 forms: optimizing health and wellness, saving time so that quality time can be spent out of the office, and (of course) travelling to relax the body and the mind. I’m so excited about this project as I’ve been able to connect with really great companies that can support my clients in their journey. SanaVita is one of them!

Erica graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University where she majored in Economics and minored in Latin American studies. She then attended New York University School of Law. I am a self-taught, NYC based director and cinematographer; I have worked around the world on numerous documentaries and TV shows. Some of my clients include TRAVEL channel, National Geographic, A&E and PBS. I am dedicated to producing content that is visually cinematic and original.

I started my own production company, Cebu Osani Films in 2007 to build a foundation for my creative ideals. My style is to approach cinema more openly, trusting my natural intuitions to guide my creative vision and allowing the story to breathe organically.

I am currently working on 2 projects. The first one is called I AM WHAT I EAT. I AM WHAT I EAT is a film series that shares stories from around the world about people and their connection to food. The first episode featured Mike Lee, the founder of the NYC supper club, Studiofeast.

My 2nd project is a feature length documentary on Night. I traveled around the vast country of America last year, finding and filming people who inhabit the night. Night people are the minority; when the rest of the country dreams the people of the night work, play and live in the shadows. ‘A Shot in the DARK’ is a film dedicated to sharing their story.

My girlfriend, Melissa Detroy, works at SanaVita and introduced me to the health and wellness world. She has shown me a lifestyle beyond just eating healthy. Her influence has helped me find balance in my life, which has been a great benefit to me both professionally and personally. Melissa’s dedication to helping people heal has been an inspiration to witness.

 

Soo’s Tips for a Healthy Complexion

A healthy glow may be deceiving. Too much exposure to the sun can leave your skin leathery, dry, wrinkled and marked with visible and invisible damage. Autumn’s cool, dry air can rob your skin of the moisture that is so vital to its healthy appearance. So, before the dry, winter weather exacerbates your sun-damaged skin, take the following measures to replenish and repair your complexion.

Hydrate Your Skin!

Inside:
Drink plenty of water. Drinking water not only hydrates your body, but also helps rehydrate your skin.

I used to hate drinking water. The taste of water didn’t appeal to me. It tasted bland. Blah! I simply didn’t feel thirsty enough to drink water and I thought my body didn’t require that much water.

The appearance of your skin — its suppleness and luster — depends on its moisture. As I get older, I see a difference when I drink enough water and when I don’t. If you are like me and don’t have a taste for water, adding lemon or green tea is an excellent way to overcome the difficulty of swallowing the tasteless fluid. Both are full of antioxidants and vitamin C.

Green tea has so many good effects on skin. I use it both internally as a tea and externally as an ingredient in my revitalizing herbal mask (more on that later). Green tea contains antioxidants that impede the damaging effects of free-radical toxins. It also contains anti-inflammatory chemicals which can counter-act signs of sun damage.

Outside:
Moisturizing the skin is also very important. There are many different options for externally hydrating your skin.

I like applying ample amounts of serum, which is also called essence. There are different types of cosmetic serums that help with issues like pore control, whitening, collagen supplementing, etc. During the extreme summer heat, pores tend to open and stay open. Aging makes it harder to tighten up the stretched pores again. I use a pore refining serum, which really helps to minimize pores loosened by summer heat without drying out your skin

Proper rest is essential for a good complexion.

Try to sleep eight hours a day. The quality and time of sleep are also very important. If possible, you should sleep between 11pm and 5am. The reason? In Oriental Medicine, the hours from 11pm to 3am are believed to be the time that the liver and gallbladder cleanse all the body’s blood. The lungs’ time is from 3am to 5am. The lungs are closely related to the skin. Healthy lungs flower into the skin, making it look lustrous and taught.

Deep, restful and unbroken sleep is also important. Proper rest doesn’t only mean 8 hours of restful sleep. It also means minimizing the use of the computer when you are not working. Sitting in front of the computer can strain your eyes. And your eyes are closely related to the liver. Tired and overworked eyes will tax your liver. Sitting idle in front of the computer for more than 30 minutes will block the circulation of qi and blood.

Acupuncture Facial
If your skin is damaged, it needs to be repaired proactively. An acupuncture facial is the best way to counteract a damaged complexion. It will clear blockages and bring more circulation of qi and blood to the face. This promotes the production of collagen, which tightens and fills in wrinkles. The increased blood circulation will bring more nutrients to the skin cells, preventing premature aging caused by sun damage.

My acupuncture facial includes an herbal poultice mask with green tea. The herbs nourish, regenerate and tighten the skin. Green tea whitens dark and dry spots and mildly exfoliates dead skin cells that choke the budding skin layer beneath.

Arul’s 37-Day Cleanse: Day 26

Well, today started off with a BANG!! Two of them to be exact. First day back to school since last week… rushing, racing, rushing, racing. And Wednesdays are busy days to begin with. After dropping my kids off at their classes, I went to use the bathroom in the stall at school. I was rushing. And racing. As I pulled my pants down I banged my elbow so hard into the corner of the steel toilet paper dispenser I literally thought I may have broken it! The pain was like the “OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD!!” kind of pain that vibrated down my arm and made my hand completely numb. I crouched frozen in my squatted position, pants half pulled down for several long moments breathing and praying. “Please let the pain subside and let it just be bruised and not broken!” I remember stubbing my toe a few years back and having that same piercing pain, praying that it would subside in a few minutes as stubbed toes often do. That time it didn’t. It was broken. Yesterday was a different story as my angels were watching over me. Although bruised and still tender, definitely NOT broken!

Soooo I hopped on Thumbalina (my horse) and headed off to SanaVita. I was riding along the bike lane when suddenly I saw a cab door opening right in front of me and although I started to break and swerve to the left… I knew there was not enough time to avoid what was about to happen. The whole experience was totally surreal. Everything started to move in super slow motion. I knew I was going down and instead of fighting it, I just let go. I prepared for what was to come, the concrete slamming against my back. I tucked my chin all the way into my chest to protect the back of my head. I tucked my pelvis in to protect my coccyx, which is quite boney and protrudes much further than most people’s, and I allowed myself to just go down.

A guy got out of the taxi and was totally sweet, concerned and attentive. He offered to take me to the hospital and helped me up along with my bicycle. I was shaking like a leaf as it is pretty shocking to get hit or fall down as it is always so unexpected. After getting up and assessing myself, I was able to separate my trembling body from the rest of it and realized I was perfectly fine. I was amazed as the fall was fairly severe and the sweet guy from the taxi seemed pretty surprised as well. He gave me his card in case I needed anything. A true New York experience came to an end as two kind souls who collided on their way to start their days, went their separate ways. FYI, turns out he has a very cool company that he started that provides very high-quality cooking stocks of a variety of flavors without ever adding salt, additives or preservatives. I was very happy to discover this as I love using stocks in many of the dishes I make — especially rice dishes for the kids or broths for me in the winter — but they are usually much too salty.

So, I got back on my bike and went to work, then to spin, to my two-hour pole dance class, back to work, to the Y to watch my kids play soccer and straight to a seminar at a holistic dentist’s office midtown. The seminar discussed the importance of testing for bacteria in the mouth, the direct correlation between healthy gums and teeth and a healthy heart and vice versa and the relationship that a healthy mouth has to the gut and again, vice versa!

The dentist offered so much interesting and surprisingly informative information. I am going to start working with them on both a personal and professional level. At the end of the lecture, DDS Reid Winick (www.dentistryforhealthny.com) offered to demonstrate a microscopic examination for the group of us and used my mouth as the subject! He took some samples with a sharp plastic hook and placed them under the microscope to examine them. Then, he showed it to us on the computer screen. I could see my white blood cells and unfortunately a few rods and vibrios which are bacteria, but I was at the 2nd level of a healthy mouth. We all know how I love to be at the #1 level, so I will be investing in a Hydrofloss, which Dr. Winick believes may just be my personal missing link to perfection!

So, my day ended in a great way! I see the day’s lesson as follows. There is plenty of time to get it all done. A few minutes loss in one place isn’t going to be what breaks me. A broken bone or back or head will. I am slowing down. I was actually riding my bike at a slow pace when I got clipped and then everything slowed down a lot after that. And I still got it all done.

The other thing I realized is that I didn’t get thrown off my center. I didn’t go into victim drama queen mode freaking out that I almost broke something. I barely even mentioned it to anyone and just moved on with my day straight from there. And while it was happening I was able to stay present and slow the experience down to a pace so that I could alter the outcome. It reminds me of my last Biofeedback session. I am less reactionary and more able to cope with life as it comes at me. I believe this is directly related to the healing process I am undergoing through this cleanse.
